FAQ

DO I HAVE TO BE IN SHAPE BEFORE I CAN START?

We get this question a lot. And the answer is NO! That's like someone feeling like they need to be really good at guitar before taking guitar lessons. That is the whole purpose of taking lessons or going to classes for something.  To get better and to learn! If anything, coming in with a blank slate could be beneficial, because now we get to help you create a solid foundation of movement patterns, terminology, strength and conditioning. This is a safe place to feel new at something. Everyone at all levels is constantly working on bettering something, so no one is above learning, and the feelings that come along with learning something new are pretty sweet. And being "in shape" is pretty subjective, no?

WILL I GET HURT DOING CROSSFIT?

Well, you can get hurt walking down the street and not seeing the curb. So we can't promise you won't. But we do everything in our power to make sure you don't. We take care of our equipment and make sure you know how to use it, we go over movement forms and help cue you to understand the intention of the movement, our coaches are trained to answer any questions and help tailor movements to your skill level. The more you come, the more you'll learn. The more you learn, the more comfortable you'll feel and be able to take care of yourself and your body.

DO I NEED TO BE AN ELITE ATHLETE TO DO THIS?

No, not at all. We aren't going to lie, it would be pretty cool to be able to do some of these things that we see on Instagram or social media, but no, you don't have to be elite at all. In fact, we think this is where some of the stigma about CrossFit comes into play.

Whenever we don't know about something, we usually search it up online. If you type in basketball, you will probably get either some result of Lebron James, Michael Jordan or some recent viral video of a kid doing a 360 degree thru the legs windmill dunk. All of these are the extremes, or the .0001% of the sport. The elite are elite because competing in CrossFit is their main job. They do this 8 hours/day. However, most of the people who do CrossFit are people who you would see walking the street by your local grocery store. Moms, accountants, teachers, students, etc. There will always be the 5% who stand out, but that means there are the other 95% who are working to improve their skills and fitness. This is who you will be surrounded by. Just good people trying to get better, together.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT CLASSES THAT YOU OFFER?

CROSSFIT: these group classes are coach-led and will include a warm-up and workout that has been programmed for that day. The coach is there to support and instruct you, whether you need help scaling a workout to your abilities or suggestions on alternatives for movements. All workouts are varied and never the same. They include a variety of gymnastics, aerobic capacity, strength training, Olympic lifting, etc.

PUSH LIFTING CLUB: dumbbell accessory work, barbell complexes, Olympic lifting, snatches, cleans, all the fun heavy stuff!

PARTNER WORKOUT: no need to bring a partner with you! The coach or the attendees will pair up on the day of the class. This normally depends on equipment being used, level of experience, etc. This is a super fun class! The purpose is to get after it, be held accountable by your teammate, push harder than you would on your own.

COMPETITION TRAINING: This class is not led by a coach and is for those that have competed or have the intention of competing in the future. Attendees should have ample experience and require no coaching. You will warm yourselves up, the clock will start, and you will do the workouts together. We are trying to simulate what a competition would feel like. The pressure, intensity of workouts, higher-level skills and weights required, etc.

P.S. We are VERY SUPPORTIVE of members pushing themselves and testing their skills at local competitions, whether RX or scaled, and always welcome anyone interested in competing to get in touch with us so we can chat about how to make that happen.

MASTER THE BASICS: This is for members who have zero to 6 months CrossFit experience. You can already be attending group classes but maybe just want a bit more assistance and coaching through the core movements such as rowing technique, squatting, deadlifts, snatches, etc. This class will be capped at 8 people and just like all programming, we will post in SugarWOD what the focus will be each week so you can plan ahead.

WHAT IS THE BEST MEMBERSHIP OPTION FOR ME?

Great question, and as you have probably seen by now, we provide only a few options: unlimited, open gym and personal training. We do not offer 1x, 2x, 3x/week options. We just don't believe that is going to move the needle forward. A lot of folks want to say they are doing something to "check the box", but then get frustrated when results don't come. Just like anything else in life, your fitness requires commitment. And we are committed to helping you.

We write our program in order for you to feel like you can do this 4-6 days a week. Now that doesn't mean hard intensity every day with max effort burpee sprints. It just means that we want you to get in the habit of prioritizing your health and wellness, even if that means just coming in and getting on the bike for 30 minutes.

If you feel like you need more personalized attention, that is where personal training comes in to play. If you feel like you need more time to focus on certain movements or have a different program you follow, Open Gym would be best for you.

WHAT IF I CAN'T DO THE PRESCRIBED WORKOUT AS WRITTEN?

That's totally okay! Honestly, nowadays most programming and coaching should be focusing on the intention and the stimulus of the workout, not just an Rx weight. CrossFit and programming have evolved and grown in so many ways since it first started. There isn't just Rx or Scaled options anymore. You do what works for you. If the whiteboard says 10 Front Squats at 135lb and you can only do 2 before you feel like your body is crumbling into a black hole, then our coaches will help to prescribe a weight that is best for you (or even tailor the movement) to still match and execute the intention of the workout. We will safely challenge you towards progression.

DO YOU OFFER ANY DISCOUNTS?

The only discount that we offer is for full-time students who show proof of current enrollment.

IS THERE PARKING/BIKE RACK AT YOUR GYM?

Yes, there is, and it's FREE! The gravel parking lot on Nickerson is available to park in and there is also free street parking on 13th Ave. There is a bike rack right outside our garage door, but you can also bring your bike into the hallway and store it there for safekeeping.

ARE DOGS ALLOWED AT THE GYM?

Of course! If you are as obsessed with your dog as we are, we completely understand the need to bring them with you everywhere. We welcome all furry friends as long as they are tied up, don't disrupt class and are comfortable being around people and loud noises.

DO YOU HAVE SHOWERS?

We wish! That is definitely on our "dreamy future gym" list, but for right now our space does not offer that. We have one bathroom inside of our gym and two bathrooms upstairs that are available to all the tenants in the building.

WHY ARE THERE SO MANY ACRONYMS IN CROSSFIT?

Probably because we are always trying to find the most efficient way to not only move, but to speak...??? We have no idea and it probably sounds like a foreign language at first. AMRAP, EMOM, HPC. Click here to familiarize yourself with all of the terms that you may see in the gym or in workouts. Or just ask us!
